都是“垃圾”，rubbish和garbage到底有什麼區別？

“扔垃圾”用英語該怎麼說呢？throw the rubbish？

可別一不小心就犯了中式英語的錯。

throw the rubbish並不是“扔垃圾”的正確表達，throw是拋、投的意思，throw the rubbish的正確含義是“拋垃圾”，這……拋不準就太尷尬了。

外國人說“扔垃圾”，一般會委婉地說成take out the trash或put it in the trash。

garbage, rubbish, trash, waste這四個詞都可以表示“垃圾”，那它們有什麼區別呢？

garbage與rubbish的區別

“垃圾”在美國、加拿大等美語國家是garbage，在英國是rubbish。

這兩個詞還可以用來比喻沒有價值的東西或事情、瞎話或者是廢話。

例如：

She was talking rubbish in the meeting.

她在會上的發言都是廢話。

The store is full of useless rubbish.

這個店裡賣的全是沒有用的破爛。

Dig a pit and bury the garbage.

挖一個坑把垃圾埋掉。

rubbish的詞性比garbage要多一些，它除了可以當名詞之外，還可以作爲動詞，意思是“強烈地批評，把什麼東西或想法說成一文不值”。

例如：

I don't understand why everyone keeps rubbishing my idea?

我不明白爲什麼每個人都覺得我的想法一文不值？

rubbish作爲形容詞，意思就是“不會，沒有能力做某件事情”。

例句：

I'm rubbish at playing computer games.

我對電子遊戲一竅不通。

My best friend is a rubbish singer.

我的好朋友根本就不會唱歌。

trash

trash也是美式英語垃圾的意思，還可以用來指“不值得尊重的人”，是非正式用語。

例如：

I don’t believe my brother dated Joanna, she’s trash.

我真不敢相信我的哥哥竟然曾經和喬安娜交往過，她簡直就是垃圾。

當trash被作爲動詞使用的時候，是非正式用語，表示“扔棄、丟棄”或者“嚴重損壞、拆毀”或者“猛烈批評”。

例如：

I try to trash all junk mail as soon as I receive it.

我準備一收到垃圾郵件就馬上扔掉。

My latest idea was totally trashed by my manager.

我最新的想法被我老闆批得一文不值。

waste

waste作爲名詞的時候，它是一個正式用語，最常用的意思是“沒有利用價值的東西，包括廢品、垃圾、廢物、廢料”或者指“時間、金錢、精力等的浪費”。

例如：

The amount of waste we produce in the house every year is astonishing.

我們一家一年所產生的垃圾簡直令人不可思議。

Don’t watch this film. It’s a complete waste of time.

千萬別看這部電影，這會是浪費時間。

waste作爲動詞時的常用意思是“因爲沒有合理應用而造成浪費”。

例如：

I don’t want to waste my time on this.

我不想爲這事兒浪費我的時間。

You are wasting a lot of water by having a bath instead of a shower.

你泡浴缸會比洗淋浴浪費很多水。

總結下來，就是：

garbage是垃圾的美式英語說法；rubbish是英式英語垃圾的意思；
